What are the procedures for getting dental veneers?

There are three stages to getting dental veneers, which would result up to three trips to your dentist. The three stages are consultation, preparation, and bonding. Many teeth can be treated simultaneously, as such repeated trips for the same stage is not necessary.

Consultation

This is the stage where diagnosis and planning for your treatment take place. Your dentist would evaluate your oral health and determine if dental veneer is the right option for you, as well as advise on alternative options if need be. Limitations of the treatment and procedures that follow will be discussed in details. If dental veneer is decided to be the go-to option, it is then important that you communicate clearly regarding the improvements you aim to accomplish, as this is critical to a successful and desirable final look. Impressions of your mouth and teeth for further analysis may be taken at this stage.

Preparation

Preparations for fabrication of your dental veneers begin at this stage, by having a certain thickness of your tooth surface, depending on material of veneers chosen, shaved off. Local anaesthesia may or may not be applied during shaving. There is a choice for composite resin veneers to be bonded shortly after shaving, should you and your dentist agree to do so. In the case of porcelain veneers, a mold or model of your teeth is created to be sent for fabrication in a dental laboratory, as bonding cannot take place immediately after. This can take anywhere between several days to two weeks. Temporary veneers might be available should you deem waiting with shaved teeth to be uncomfortable.

Bonding

As mentioned above, bonding of composite resin veneers can take place shortly after, while this takes place in yet another trip if porcelain ones are chosen instead. At this stage, your dentist will carefully place the veneer material onto your prepared teeth, to examine its fit and colour. This may be done repeatedly as veneers are removed and trimmed to achieve the proper fit and desired result; adjustments of veneer colour with the shade of cement to be used will also made. Your teeth will be cleaned and roughened with specific chemicals to allow for a proper bonding. Special cement is applied to the veneer and then fitted on the tooth, which would be cured with a special light beam. After final adjustments are made, you may be required to return for a follow-up visit for check up at Utama Medical Clinic after a week or two.
